Edguy nace como una banda de compañeros de clase de secundaria, Tobias Sammet y Jens Ludwig, compañeros de clase, junto Dirk Sauer (de otra clase compartida) y Dominik Storch.

Obtuvieron un contrato discográfico con el sello AFM Records en 1995.
Edguy es uno de los mayores representantes del Power europeo. Sus líricas generalmente metafóricas aluden a temas tanto sociales como metafísicos, lineamientos de la Iglesia y los peligros de la civilización moderna. Para manifestar estos temas, Edguy utiliza expresiones esotéricas y herméticas. Igualmente muchos de sus temas son ligeros y hasta cómicos. Edguy no afirma representar ninguna ideología en particular, como lo dice el mismo Sammet “No somos políticos ni religiosos, al menos no hay mensajes claves en nuestros temas que te lleven a pensar nada en cuanto a cualquier cosa”.

Con apenosa 16 años, los jóvenes Edguy graban un demo llamada Savage poetry, que será reeditado el año 2000 (esta última versión es la colgada aquí).
En 1997, ya más arraigados editan Kingdom of madness… la banda sigue siendo inconstante al no contar con bajista fijo.
La formación para el disco fue: Jens Ludwig y Dirk Sauer (guitarras), Tobias Sammet (voz, bajo, teclado) y Dominik Storch (batería)... además de la participación de Chris Boltendahl (voz en 09)...

... En 1998 sale al mercado Vain glory opera. El álbum fue producido por Timo Tolkki (Stratovarius) quien además colaboró con las guitarras. Este trabajo incluyó como artista invitado en las voces a Hansi Kürsh (Blind Guardian) en los temas Out of control y Vain glory opera. Las sesiones de batería fueron de Frank Lindenhall quien reemplazo a Storch...

... Tobias Exxel se une a las banda en 1998, aligerando el peso de Sammet que tenía que hacer el bajo con su teclado.
En 1999 graban Theater of salvation, el primero con Tobias Exxel al bajo.

... En el primer trimestre del año 2001, los cinco jóvenes alemanes se meten en un estudio y con la ayuda de Miko Karmila, productor de Stratovarius entre muchos más, producen Mandrake...

... 2003, producen su primer álbum en vivo: Burning down the opera live!, grabado completamente en París, Francia. Contiene el tema “Avantasia”, que aunque forma parte de un proyecto paralelo de Tobias del mismo nombre, su calidad compositiva esta al mismo nivel de excelencia de las otras composiciones de la Edguy.

... 2004: entregan su trabajo doble Hall of flames, el cual contiene una compilación de éxitos remasterizados por Mika Jussila y cortes nunca antes editados además de temas en vivo que habían estado únicamente disponibles en el mercado Japonés. Este recopilatoria marca el fin de Edguy con la discográgica AFM....
